The Greenhouse Indicator

New South Wales

The Greenhouse Indicator provides accurate and real time information on greenhouse gases produced each week in New South Wales from energy use. The weekly Indicator accounts for more than 80% of NSW’s total energy emissions and 60% of the State’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Remaining emissions come from agriculture, land use, waste, industrial processes and fugitive emissions from coal mining. Unlike Victoria, no regular accurate data is currently available for gas consumption other than gas used for electricity generation in NSW. Greenhouse gas emissions in NSW not included by the Indicator are estimated to be on average 1.2 million tonnes per week.

NSW’s emissions from energy this week fell by a further 3.0% or 52,000 tonnes reaching the lowest level since 2007. Emissions from coal-fired electricity, which accounted for 97.3% of electricity generation in NSW this week, fell by a further 3.9% or 39,000 tonnes also to the lowest level since 2007. This was due to a further increase in imports of electricity from other states. Emissions from gas-fired generators fell by 51.6% or 8,000 tonnes. Emissions from petroleum products decreased by 0.7% or 5,000 tonnes. This week’s Indicator is 9.4% lower than the same week in 2008. This week’s Indicator is 15.0% above the 1990 weekly average for equivalent energy emissions.
